CELT (Centre for Environmental Living & Training), the East Clare- based environmental education non-governmental organisation, have, in association with Fracking-Free Clare campaign put together a concise document expressing their policy regarding shale gas and hydraulic fracturing (fracking) extraction technique as proposed for parts of County Clare and other regions of Ireland.
They call for a national ban on fracking and cite some strong reasons as to why proposed fracking operations would be inappropriate, dangerous and, in the long-term, non-beneficial economically, socially and environmentally.
CELT spokesperson Bob Wilson said :
“CELT ethos is about living sustainably and also giving top priority to health and safety issues. Proposed fracking operations would be unsustainable and would pose serious risks to health and safety of humans, animals and the environment. Clare has unique characteristics of hydrology and geology that make it particularly inappropriate for this kind of activity and Ireland is a small country renowned for it’s clean, green, agriculture and it’s scenic, relatively unspoilt countryside, much admired as a tourism destination. For these reasons, and as explained in our policy document, we fully support the work of Fracking-Free Clare campaign and call for a ban on fracking in Clare and in Ireland.”
