Purpose of the Commission for the Economic Development of Rural Areas
Having regard to the commitments on economic development contained in the Programme for Government, this commission, in particular is seeking to identify the best means of encouraging job creation and sustainable enterprise development in rural areas.
Our task is to develop a jobs strategy that will allow rural areas to benefit from and contribute to national economic recovery. The strategy will identify critical challenges facing rural economic development, identify opportunities for further development of existing enterprises and establish the potential for the creation of new jobs and enterprises. The strategy, within the context of the pressures on the public finances, will make recommendation; inform prioritisation made by Government and other stakeholders in implementing future actions that will facilitate economic development of rural areas.
A definition of rural areas in the context of this commission is all areas outside the 5 main cities of Ireland, which include Galway, Cork, Dublin, Limerick and Waterford.
Invitation to tell us what you think
Over the next few months, members of the Commission will engage with key stakeholders, including communities, throughout rural areas. We want to hear your ideas, however radical, and your views about how jobs and enterprises can be created in rural areas.
We invite anyone with views about the future of the rural economy and rural job creation to write to the Commission by 30 June 2013.
