A talk and tour at the farmers market before touring the allotments and viewing the solar powered irrigation system.
We will first visit the Farmers Market held in Skerries Mills every Saturday from 10 am until 4 pm. Here we will meetwith Sustainable Skerries Members who will explain about what Sustainable Skerries is, and the projects that it is active with. Of particular interest will be the Community Harvest Group. This is a Community Supported Agriculture scheme, and the project is a partnership between local people in Skerries and a local grower.
We will then be given a tour of the Skerries Allotments, and the solar powered irrigation system that it utilises. There will be an opportunity for Green Communities members to participate with some ground work which may involve building raised beds or fencing using recycled pallet wood. We will also be providing a picnic lunch at the allotments for participants … “Alfresco” if conditions allow, but within the poly-tunnel if necessary!
Finally there will be an opportunity for a visit to see the farm site that has partnered with the Community Harvest Group to grow the food for the members’ weekly food boxes. This scheme can be further explained, and any visitors living within the catchment area can join this Community Supported Agriculture Scheme if they wish.
