Support for EU Agricultural Commissioner
‘Fortress Europe’ subsidies criticised
27 May 2013: Support for EU agriculture commissioner Dacian Ciolos and Ireland’s smaller farmers was expressed by the environmental lobby group Friends of the Irish Environment as the two-day informal EU council of agriculture ministers got under way at Dublin Castle this morning.
In a statement issued today, the organisation said that ‘misinformation in the media suggested that the sole aim of EU agricultural policy is to ensure ‘viable food production’. In fact, the sustainable management of natural resources and the balanced development of rural area throughout the EU (and beyond) compose the other equally important objectives of EU agricultural policy.’
