The Irish Wildlife Trust (IWT) was founded in 1979 as The Irish Wildlife Federation (IWF) as a charitable conservation body (Registered charity number: CHY 6264). The objective of the IWT is the conservation of Ireland’s wildlife and habitats.
Since its beginnings, the IWF has contributed to wildlife conservation through campaigning and lobbying. One of the highest profile campaigns was aimed at alleviating the plight of the badger, which since the 1970′s has been roundly blamed for contributing to the spread of bovine tuberculosis, an issue, which continues to this day. As a result of this campaign the IWF adopted the logo of a badger over several years. In 2004 the IWT launched our new logo which you see deplayed on our website initiating a new era for the IWT and celebrating our 25th anniversary.
At a special general meeting of the IWF in May 1996 in Knocksink, the members agreed unanimously to change the name of the organisation to The Irish Wildlife Trust. This was a nominal change only, not affecting the status of the organisation, which remains a charitable organisation whose liability is limited by guarantee.
