The Irish Peatland Conservation Council (Comhairle Chaomhnaithe Phortaigh na hÉireann) is an independent conservation charity.

We were established in 1982 to campaign for the conservation of a representative sample of living intact Irish bogs and peatlands as part of Ireland’s heritage.

We believe that Ireland’s remaining peatlands should be treated as a precious resource that cannot be replaced, and that a representative sample should therefore be protected.

Our activities include education and publicity, promoting environmental awareness, provision of information and encouraging the protection and conservation of our national heritage for the common good.

We own and manage a number of peatlands for conservation and we run the Bog of Allen Nature Centre in Co. Kildare which is open to visitors and school groups.

The Irish Peatland Conservation Council is a company limited by guarantee, with charitable status.

Our work includes:

  • purchasing and managing bogland nature reserves
  • providing resources and training for teachers and education groups
  • promoting environmental awareness
  • publicity
  • repairing and restoring damaged bogs
  • fostering a positive attitude towards bogs
  • and encouraging lifestyles in harmony with the environment

You can find out more about IPCC’s specific actions targeting the conservation of bogs by checking out our specific campaign action contained in our Bogs & Fens of Ireland Conservation Plan 2005. Find out about the 24 actions we are working on by going here.

In 2008/09 we are working on a Peatlands 2020 Conservation Plan which aims to halt the loss of peatland biodiversity and introduce measures to help us adapt to the effects of climate change. Find out about Peatlands 2020 using this link
