The INFF was established in West Cork in 2002 to research, demonstrate, and promote sustainable forestry practices based on native broadleaf trees.

Through a programme of policy research, INFF seeks to identify the range of broadleaf species with economic potential for Ireland and to explore existing and potential markets for these species. The Foundation is particularly concerned to identify alternative uses for broadleaf timber based on national and international research, with emphasis on innovative technologies. INFF seeks to initiate exchanges of information between Ireland and European countries where forestry is an integral part of farming.

INFF is a non-profit charity limited by guarantee with seven directors. It is supported by a number of West Cork residents, including Jeremy Irons, David Puttnam, and Darina Allen.
