Field day to learn how to identify and survey glasswort Salicornia spp including the red data perennial Glasswort in Bannow Bay.
Aims:
- Improve EU habitat protection and recognition of those who manage and protect well.
- Prevent damage of one of Ireland’s rarest coastal habitats by infill for coastal and and access road erosion protection, or careless driving/parking.
Objectives:
- Inform and teach local residents and scouts how to ID 2 EU coastal habitats which are vulnerable to accidental damage and sea level rise
- Highlight areas of high level informed land and shore management which has resulted in localized flourishing of the habitats.

Biodiversity Focus:
Glasswort Salocornia species as one group collectively known as Salicornia Mud 1310 EU habitat
And the rare perennial Glasswort Sarcocornia perennis (1420) found only around this bay.Songs are in three categories land, fresh water and marine. Where possible, songs will focus on species representing the country in the Malahide castle Biodiversity Monument. (erected during the Irish EU presidency and ‘Malahide Message’. – see appendix 2)
Field work will center around the songs and habitats and conditions needed by the species to be in favorable conservation status.
As bats and cave beetles aren’t popular in folk songs, but vital elements of our Nature, the host country can chose another species of that ‘type’ for their song – or perform a new song.
