Events lead by a network of expert naturalists will be held in every county to discover, explore and enjoy what the natural world has to offer in dozens of the best wildlife sites of the country. Participants will learn about biodiversity, actively engage in how to identify and record species including invasive species and what they can do to halt the loss of biodiversity)
Aims to:
- Build awareness of biodiversity/wildlife issues amongst individuals, families and communities.
- Upskill people to identify and record biodiversity in their local area.
- Encourage people to take action for biodiversity in their local area and halt the loss of biodiversity.
Objectives:
- To empower people to protect Ireland’s biodiversity at a local level by becoming active citizens.
- To foster a sense pride and ownership over natural heritage/biodiversity at a local level. Evoking an emotional response.
Target Audience: Directly involved participants include the general public in all counties in Ireland. There will be up to 30 people per group. Around 780 people will be reached directly.

Biodiversity Focus: This project will focus on mainly habitats and species with a particular focus on invasive alien species e.g. rhododendron, Japanese knotweed, Gunnera, Giant Hogweed, Himalayan balsam, Cherry laurel and how to manage them. IWT will liaise with Invasive Species Ireland who have good leaflets and literature on this and also liaise with Liam Lysaght of the National Biodiversity Data Centre to formulate what would constitute a usable/verifiable record of invasive species.
Geographic area: Excellent geographic spread – every county in Ireland will be covered
