How many bats are roosting in your house or local area? This project aims:

  1. To encourage people to actively survey for bats by counting the number of bats roosting in  local building or habitat where bats are likely to be foraging (e.g. bridge over a river or woodland habitat).
  2. Nationwide bat count will be undertaken on a set date during biodiversity week to promote a nationwide awareness of an important mammal group that represents ¼ of the total number of terrestrial mammals in Ireland.
  3. From the number of bats counted by all participants, the number of insects eaten will be calculated (3,000 midges per bat per night).
