- To encourage people to actively survey for bats by counting the number of bats roosting in local building or habitat where bats are likely to be foraging (e.g. bridge over a river or woodland habitat).
- Nationwide bat count will be undertaken on a set date during biodiversity week to promote a nationwide awareness of an important mammal group that represents ¼ of the total number of terrestrial mammals in Ireland.
- From the number of bats counted by all participants, the number of insects eaten will be calculated (3,000 midges per bat per night).
