On September 11th at 3pm history will be made when 5 seal pups are released back to the wild from Strandhill beach in Sligo.
Two of the pups were rehabilitated by the Irish Seal Sanctuary (ISS) volunteers and staff at the new home of the Irish Seal Sanctuary in Courtown Harbour, Co Wexford; the other three were nursed back to health by the ISS volunteers, at the .ISS satellite operation in Dingle Wildlife and Seal Sanctuary, Co Kerry.
The new centre in Courtown Harbour and the satellite centre in Dingle have already attracted thousands of visitors to both areas and have proven to be very popular among both adults and children. With the grey seal breeding season approaching, the winter will be even more interesting to the visitors as the summer!, when the whitecoat pups start to arrive.
Four of the seal pups were rescued in Sligo with the fifth coming from Gweebara Bay in County Donegal.
The pups have all thrived and during the process of their rehabilitation they have entertained visitors who marvelled at these special creatures, ambassadors from the deep.
Volunteers from both Wexford and Kerry will travel to Sligo with their special cargo and release them back to the wild to return to their colonies. The harbour seal colony in Sligo is one of the largest and most important harbour seal colonies in the country and offer opportunities for ecotourism in the area.
Everyone is welcome to attend – it is a very special, recession proof event! No charge.!
