Earth Hour 2010 Kicks Off in China

Earth Hour officially kicked off on February 1st in China with a major show of support from Chengdu, the first city in the country to commit to turning off its lights. IEN appoints coordinator

Michael Ewing has been appointed as the IEN coordinator as of January 27. He will be responsible for management of all the employees of IEN. Irish NGO to get major international exposure

Just Forests is to be showcased on the IUCN COUNTDOWN 2010 website as a Featured Partner for the month of February 2010. European Council finally acts against illegal logging

Just Forests welcomes the EU Council’s announcement (Brussels, 28th January 2010) of an agreed draft regulation laying down obligations of operators who place timber and timber products on the European market “For many years we have campaigned on this issue of illegal timber entering Ireland”, according to Tom Roche of Just Forests. Irish Environmental Network welcomes 30 kph zone in Dublin City Centre

IEN, the umbrella group for Ireland’s national environmental organisations, has commended Dublin City Council for introducing the country’s first city centre 30 kph zone, saying it points the way for other city and town councils to undertake similar initiatives. “Cars are part of the city but their presence should not be dominant, or deter pedestrians and cyclists from town centres.
