EU needs waste prevention and recycling targets to help the climate
A new study, released on the 14th February 2008, shows that the proposed binding minimum EU recycling targets of 50% for municipal waste by 2020, currently discussed by the European Parliament, could save emissions equivalent to more than 89 million tonnes (mt) of CO2 equivalent per year. Environmental groups welcome UK government concern over biofuels
Environmental groups BirdLife International, EEB, Friends of the Earth and Transport and Environment, welcome UK transport secretary Ruth Kelly’s announcement that the UK will initiate a wide ranging review of biofuel production. Right time for battery charger proposal to power up
The European Environmental Bureau (EEB), Europe’s largest federation of environmental citizens’ organisations, is calling for an immediate EU-wide measure to ensure the compatibility of battery chargers and power supply devices. Report by An Taisce. This was a preparatory meeting for the forthcoming June 2008 Conference of the Parties in Riga. The Secretariat was criticised for not having produced all of the preparatory documents for this particular meeting, but they did make the point that their budget had been constrained. Minister Sean Haughey, T.D. Minister of State at the Department of Education and Science presented ECO-UNESCO with their FETAC Quality Assurance Agreement on 31st January 2008. This award recognises ECO-UNESCO as a quality assured FETAC training centre and is a very important achievement for the organisation.
